Library Overview

Organized in 1946 but containing materials collected by Rutgers University since shortly after its founding in 1766, Special Collections and University Archives holds the largest, most comprehensive, and most researched collection devoted to the history and culture of New Jersey. Included are over 2,200 manuscript collections and 120,000 volumes which encompass personal and organizational papers, diaries, documents, maps, broadsides, and pictorial materials in fields such as business, labor, politics, religion, medicine, technology, women's history, social welfare and policy, genealogy, utopian communities, and urban planning. The University Archives contains the official records and memorabilia of Rutgers. Other collecting strengths include American women artists, history of the consumer movement, 20th-century Latin American politics and society, 20th-century labor history, and Japanese-American relations during the Meiji period.

The Institute of Jazz Studies (IJS) is a special collection of the John Cotton Dana Library on the Rutgers Newark Campus. It is the most comprehensive archive of jazz and jazz-related materials in the world. IJS was founded in 1952 in New York City by pioneering jazz scholar Marshall Stearns, who selected Rutgers as its permanent home in 1966. Holdings include over 100,000 sound recordings in all formats, more than 30,000 photographs, a comprehensive book and periodical collection, as well as memorabilia and rare musical instruments. Among its extensive archival holdings are the collections of two of jazz's most significant creators: Mary Lou Williams and James P. Johnson. IJS produces two major publications: the Annual Review of Jazz Studies, since 1973, and Studies in Jazz, a monograph series now numbering over 50 titles. The award-winning "Digital Greats" Web site exhibit is one of several digital projects.
