Library Overview

The M. E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives includes approximately 600 manuscript collections, 40,000 volumes, and more than 30,000 photographs. Its strengths include the Archive of Public Affairs and Policy, a collection of over 5,000 cubic feet of manuscript collections from individuals and private interest groups concerned with 20th-century New York State political issues, and the German and Jewish Intellectual Émigré Collection documenting the intellectual exodus of the 1930s and 1940s. A recent addition to Special Collections, the National Death Penalty Archive, contains records that document the history of capital punishment in the United States. The University Archives holds the official records and publications of the University at Albany and its predecessor institutions from its origins in 1844 to the present, student publications and memorabilia, and the papers of distinguished faculty and alumni, including those of Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Kennedy, biographer Joseph Persico, and children's book author and illustrator Marcia J. Brown. The department also houses three important book collections. The Miriam Snow Mathes Historical Children's Literature Collection includes over 12,000 children's books and periodicals published between 1800 and 1960. The Elzevier Collection consists of 700 volumes from the printing offices of the Elzevier family, which flourished in the Dutch Republic between 1583 and 1702, and the Mordecai Kosover Collection of Judaica includes materials published between 1584 and 1850.
