Library Overview

Special collections in the University at Buffalo Libraries reach across a broad range of disciplines at this comprehensive, research-intensive public university, offering students and faculty unparalleled opportunities for study and discovery. The rich offerings also draw in and engage regional, national, and international students and scholars. The Robert L. Brown History of Medicine Collection contains the Edgar R. McGuire Historical Medical Instrument Collection and historical materials in all areas of the health sciences, including dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and public health. Law Library special collections include rare books, archives, and Tibetan legal manuscripts. Lockwood Library's Polish Room serves as a regional research center for Poland's arts and history. The Music Library holds print, visual, and aural documentation of contemporary music creation and performance at the university. These specialized resources supplement the main Special Collections area encompassing the Poetry Collection, Rare Books, and University Archives. Rare Books holds the great works of literature in their most prized editions, including William Shakespeare's first four folios, first editions of Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene (1590), Robert Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy (1621), Milton's Paradise Lost (1667), and a signed copy of the first edition of Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. The collection sustains research in literary history and provides exquisite raw materials for investigating the history of printing and the book. Private presses such as Kelmscott Press and Doves Press are well represented. University Archives' manuscript and archival collections support research on campus unrest; race relations; environmental issues including Love Canal; women's history; political and social issues and the alternative press; and regional architecture, including Frank Lloyd Wright's Buffalo creations.
