Library Overview

The University of Kentucky Libraries' Special Collections and Digital Programs (SCDP) is the commonwealth's largest repository of privately generated primary resource material and rare printed resources.

The extensive manuscripts, rare books, and serials holdings in SCDP are particularly noted for the Kentuckiana and W. Hugh Peal collections. The former, documenting the commonwealth's history and culture, contains rare Kentucky imprints and unique primary sources, while the latter is a rich collection of early editions and manuscripts of 19th-century British and American authors. Other notable holdings include the Bert T. Combs Appalachian Collection, which features an array of primary and secondary source holdings supporting Appalachian studies, and the Public Policy Archives, which comprises the collections of many prominent Kentuckians and organizations involved in public policy. In addition, the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History contains more than 6,500 interviews representing more than 100 national or Kentucky-related projects. The University Archives and Records Program, also included in SCDP, preserves the institution's historical record and coordinates the management of the university's academic and administrative records. Moreover, SCDP's Audio-Visual Archives houses millions of sound recordings, moving images, and still photographs, including those of the Lexington Herald-Leader from the years 1938 to 1990.

The King Library Press, a hand-press publisher, actively perpetuates the book arts as it serves as a centerpiece in the hands-on teaching of printing history. Its electronic counterpart is Preservation and Digital Programs, whose projects include providing material to the statewide Kentuckiana Digital Library, contributing to the National Digital Newspaper Program, extensively reformatting the Daily Racing Form, and preserving Kentucky newspapers from across the commonwealth.
